HAIR REMOVAL & ELECTROLYSIS SAN DIEGO CA

Electrolysis is a method of removing hairs individually from the face and body. An electrolysis technician must go to school and be licensed by the California Board of Cosmetology.  Electrolysis has a device with a small metal probe that is inserted down the shaft of the hair to the hair plexus where a small electrical current is used to destroy the hair. Thereafter, this individual hair is extracted from the body. Electrolysis can be used on any hair but is an extremely slow process.

An electrolysis session can last up to two hours or more at a time for a small space the size of a nickel to a quarter at a time.

ELECTROLYSIS VS. LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Electrolysis began in 1875 and was invested by Dr. Charles Michel, a St. Louis ophthalmologist, who devised this system to remove his patient’s painful ingrown eyelashes. It has grown over time into a consumer trade to address needs for beautification. Gender Identity disorder first appeared as a diagnosis in the DSM-III (1980), where it appeared under “psychosexual disorders” but was used only for the childhood diagnosis. Over time, it began to be used for the treatment of gender dysphoria. Laser hair removal has been performed experimentally for about twenty years before becoming commercially available in 1995. As laser hair removal technology improves electrolysis often focuses on the hair that the laser hair removal machine cannot treat effectively.

COMBINATIONS

Combinations can be used when there is a combination of different colors of hair or different needs on different quadrants of the body.

MEDICALLY NECESSARY VS. COSMETIC

With World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH) is the leading expert when it comes to transgender health. The WPATH recommends hair removal for transgender persons to treat their gender dysphoria. Treating this condition improves the quality of life for the transgender individual and treats this medical condition. Treating this condition addresses the psychological needs of the transgender person, improving their quality of life, and as a result, treating the needs of the transgender person so they can be more productive in society.

With the guidance of WPATH, most insurances have determined that treatment on the face, neck, chest, abdomen, and back are considered medically necessary. They have determined that legs, bikini lines, arms, and armpits are cosmetic. There is some rare exception when it comes to Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome and other genetic conditions that deter gender transition or infection.

The legal standards are determined by the California Department of Managed Healthcare’s Independent Medical Reviews. These determinations are public on their website and are very informative as to the legal standard for transgender Californians.
